The Immunization Action Coalition of Washington: Protecting Washington, One Vaccine at a Time

At WithinReach, we’re proud to serve as the backbone organization for the Immunization Action Coalition of Washington (IACW), a powerful statewide coalition founded in 1994. For 30 years, IACW has worked to improve the health of Washington families by promoting equitable access to immunizations. This legacy of collaboration and leadership was a cause for celebration as we marked our 30th anniversary this year.

This milestone is not just a reflection on our past, but a motivation for our future. Our work is more critical than ever, and the need for collaborative action is exemplified in our recent efforts.

A Foundation of Community and Collaboration

At its heart, IACW is a network of diverse stakeholders—from public health officials and clinicians to pharmacists and community health boards—all united by a common mission. This past year, our quarterly coalition meetings brought together an average of 60 attendees per session to discuss immunization strategies that are both evidence-based and culturally appropriate.

We actively center the voices and needs of diverse communities, particularly those disproportionately affected by health inequities. This commitment to community-driven solutions was highlighted in our Community Health Efforts Across Washington Series, which featured speakers from:

  • NASHI Health Board
  • Somali Health Board
  • Congolese United Foundation
  • The American Indian Health Commission Tribal and Urban Immunization Coalition
  • Hepatitis Education Project
  • American Lung Association

These sessions fostered rich discussions on culturally responsive strategies to address vaccine hesitancy and improve community engagement and confidence.

Innovative Work on Respiratory Health

One of our most impactful recent initiatives is the Respiratory Season Subcommittee, launched in 2023. This collaborative group was formed to tackle barriers to respiratory illness vaccines (for RSV, COVID-19, and influenza) through provider education and community engagement.

In just its first year, the subcommittee grew from 13 to 36 active members. This dedicated team developed patient-friendly, multilingual educational materials to demystify vaccines and address payment concerns, ensuring equitable access to vital health information across the state.

These efforts are already showing results. We are proud to report that during the 2024-2025 respiratory season, RSV immunization rates among children 0-19 months old increased in Washington, a testament to the collective action of many organizations and individuals statewide.

“Reaching this 30-year milestone is a testament to the power of collaboration and unwavering commitment from all our partners,” shared a representative from the IACW 30th Anniversary celebration. “Together, we have made significant strides in improving immunization rates and protecting the health of Washington families.”

The work of IACW is a reminder that immunization is about more than just shots; it’s about community, equity, and trust. As we look ahead, we know the path to a healthier future requires us to continue asking the right questions and listening to the communities we serve.
