Food Access for Every Family in Washington

No family should have to choose between a healthy meal and other essential needs. Yet even in Washington — a state with one of the highest food assistance participation rates in the country — thousands of eligible families face complex barriers.

WithinReach meets families where they are, helping them access SNAP, WIC, local food banks, and other essentials quickly and with care, so they can focus on school, work, and well-being.

For over 35 years, WithinReach has been a trusted leader in Washington, connecting families with young children to the resources they need. Behind this work is a strategic, compassionate team, many of whom proudly describe themselves as “WIC babies” or “Medicaid babies.”

Our team understands what it means to navigate these complex and confusing systems and have dedicated their careers to making that path clearer and more accessible for others.

Our Approach: Meeting Families Where They Are

We serve as a primary link between Washington families and critical food access programs, including SNAP (known in Washington as Basic Food), WIC, and local food banks — ensuring families can access the nutrition they need to stay healthy and strong.

WHY this work matters

Basic Food (SNAP) reaches 888,300 people in Washington—1 in 9 residents. It’s one of our state’s most effective tools against hunger and hardship. Participation is high: an estimated 94% of eligible Washingtonians are enrolled—yet many still face barriers that require navigation support. As grocery costs continue to skyrocket, the average monthly benefit for households with children is $456, a meaningful boost to a family’s budget.

Basic Food outreach is an investment in Washington’s economy. Families spend these dollars immediately and exclusively at local grocery stores, so every $1 in Basic Food benefits generates an estimated $1.50–$1.80 in local economic activity — strengthening neighborhood stores, supporting jobs, and circulating dollars back into communities.
