Building Healthy Communities: The Critical Role of Immunization Access

Recent Measles Cases Highlight Interconnectedness of Community Health

As of April 2025, Washington State has reported four confirmed measles cases, along with one additional exposure involving a Canadian resident who passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and stayed overnight in Tukwila on April 6 and 7 while infectious. The individual was likely exposed to measles during international travel, and their vaccination status is currently unknown. Health officials indicate that the risk to the general public remains low, thanks to widespread community immunity through vaccination. These cases and exposures serve as a potent reminder of the interconnectedness of our communities and the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to protect public health.

Immunization: A Key Component of Community Well-Being

The resurgence of measles, a highly contagious and potentially serious disease, underscores the importance of strong community immunity. While individual health choices are personal, understanding the impact of those choices on the broader community is essential. Immunization is not just about individual protection; it’s about safeguarding the health of everyone.

Dr. James Lewis, Health Officer for the Snohomish County Health Department, emphasizes this interconnectedness: “Measles spreads easily in communities with low immunity, which is why maintaining high vaccination rates is so critical. Experts recommend a 95% vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks, but we’re currently below that threshold in many areas. Without the rapid response from public health departments to conduct contact tracing, we could have seen significantly more cases.”

The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is a powerful tool, providing effective protection against measles. Offering families clear, accurate information about vaccines empowers them to make informed decisions that benefit both their families and the community.
